23/09/2009 - Important message about the Racecourse

We need your help and support! Or more accurately, numerous children and young people who live in central Northampton and who would like more facilities for play at The Racecourse would. (hopefully including you!)

As the Healthy Living Hub project group of The Friends of Northampton Racecourse, we've been working with groups of young people and other groups over the past few years to obtain resources for new and improved play facilities, particularly for the 10+ year old age young people. We've successfully raised £80,000 for 'adventure play' and 'play in the landscape' facilities which, if all goes to plan, will be on The Racecourse by next April. Throughout this process, we've endeavoured to continually discuss and consult with local people so that the proposals are agreeable and enhance the area; the current play designs reflect this with bespoke equipment made of (as far-as-possible) natural materials that will be in keeping with the area and which will not unduly impinge on the wide open spaces of the park.

The Friends of Northampton Racecourse meet this Thursday evening, 7.30pm at the Leicester St. Community Rooms to discuss and agree the play space proposals so that tenders can be sent out to potential contractors next Monday. Please come along to hear more about the proposals and, if appropriate to give your support to the plans. The past few years spent working on this project have left me in no doubt that this is what the vast majority of local people would like to see on The Racecourse -however, our concern is that this may be the silent majority who's views are not heard or represented at Thursday's meeting and the proposals could get rejected.

Of course you may not be able to attend on Thursday -but

 a) please could you spread the word by telling  anyone else you think would welcome these proposals, and

 b) send  an email before Thursday saying you would like to see play facilities for young people on The Racecourse, if you are able to. email steve.summers1@ntlworld.com
